Epiphanies which means the manifestation of God was the term used for the king Antiochus IV. For the Jews the two main tenants that were very important were the dietary laws as well as circumcision which were prohibited by Antiochus. The Jews however were very strong in their belief and Jewish superstitions and accordingly refused worshiping the manifested God, Antiochus.
